Fast Signed-Digit Multi-operand Decimal Adders

چکیده
Decimal arithmetic is desirable for high precision requirements of many financial, industrial and scientific applications. Furthermore, hardware support for decimal arithmetic has gained momentum with IEEE 7542008, which standardized decimal floating-point. This paper presents a new architecture for two operand and multi-operand signed-digit decimal addition. Signed-digit architectures are advantageous because there are no carry-propagate chains. The proposed signed-digit adder reduces the critical path delay by parallelizing the correction stage inherent to decimal addition. For performance evaluation, we synthesize and compare multiple unsigned and signed-digit multi-operand decimal adder architectures on 0.18 μm CMOS VLSI technology. Synthesis results for 2, 4, 8, and 16 operands with 8 decimal digits provide critical data in determining each adder’s performance and scalability.

A Fast Combined Decimal Adder/Subtractor
An algorithm for a fast decimal addition is proposed. The addition is performed in two steps. First, the result of addition is produced in a decimal signed-digit format. Second, the decimal signed-digit result is converted into the non-redundant form BCD. The conversion uses a borrow generating scheme based on a parallel-prefix network. Using the flexible features of the decimal signed-digit re...

This paper introduces novel architecture for Radix-10 decimal multiplier. The new generation of highperformance decimal floating-point units (DFUs) is demanding efficient implementations of parallel decimal multiplier. The parallel generation of partial products is performed using signed-digit radix-10 recoding of the multiplier and a simplified set of multiplicand multiples. The reduction of p...

Signed digit (SD) number systems provide the possibility of constant-time addition, where inter-digit carry propagation is eliminated. Such carry-free addition is primarily a three-step process; adding the equally weighted SDs to form the primary sum digits, decomposing the latter to interim sum digits and transfer digits, which commonly belong to {–1, 0, 1}, and finally adding the tra...
متن کاملA fully redundant decimal adder and its application in parallel decimal multipliers
Decimal hardware arithmetic units have recently regained popularity, as there is now a high demand for high performance decimal arithmetic. We propose a novel method for carry-free addition of decimal numbers, where each equally weighted decimal digit pair of the two operands is partitioned into two weighted bit-sets. The arithmetic values of these bit-sets are evaluated, in parallel, for fast ...
متن کاملSigned Digit Addition and Related Operations with Threshold Logic
ÐAssuming signed digit number representations, we investigate the implementation of some addition related operations assuming linear threshold networks. We measure the depth and size of the networks in terms of linear threshold gates. We show first that a depth-2 network with O n size, weight, and fan-in complexities can perform signed digit symmetric functions. Consequently, assuming radix-2 ...
